About NOMTI
The New Opera and Musical Theater Initiative (NOMTI) is a group of musical theater writers who support each other in creating high-quality new works for musical theater.
Day-to-day management of NOMTI is handled by a committee of three facilitators, who are also members of the Board. They run the Advanced Writers Lab (overseeing admissions, scheduling, hiring actors and monitoring feedback), teach the occasional seminar, and keep us legal. The Advanced Writers Lab is a peer feedback and craft-building group open to a limited number of experienced book-writers, composers and lyricists. Applications are accepted throughout the year. The Advanced Writers Lab has been in operation since 2007. A list of past members is available here. Past Programs NOMTI was founded in 1997 by Michael Wartofsky as an open workshop that met weekly until 2007, when the Advanced Writers Lab was formed. From 1999-2004, NOMTI sponsored annual staged readings of new work under the names Open Call Festival of New Works and Birth of a Musical. These were discontinued because the work of producing was felt to be outside our central mission of supporting the writing process. From time to time, NOMTI's facilitators have presented an intensive two-day instructional seminar covering the most critical elements of writing for musical theater. The Seminar was last presented in 2010. |
